When Do I Need a Braking System?

Understanding When the TS1200/3500 Makes the Difference

At Martin Trunnion Tables, we design every solution to enhance the performance and precision of your machining setup. One of the most valuable upgrades for high-force applications is a braking system. While most rotary tables offer built-in braking, there are situations where that torque just isn’t enough. That’s where our TS1200/3500 braking systems come in. So, when does it make sense to add one?

Here are three common scenarios where the additional braking torque of the TS1200/3500 is essential to getting the job done right:

1. Heavy Off-Center Drilling or Milling

When you're machining off-center — especially with long tools or extended workpieces — the rotational force multiplies quickly. This can result in slight table movement, even with a quality rotary table.

The TS1200/3500 provide up to 900 ft-lbs of braking torque, keeping your position locked in during aggressive cuts.

This is especially important when you’re working on complex geometries or performing deep-hole drilling operations that generate a lot of torque away from centerline.

2. Machining Hard Materials

Tough materials like titanium, Inconel, or hardened steel put tremendous force on your rotary table. Standard braking torque often falls short of maintaining positional accuracy during these cuts.

The TS1200/3500 maintain exceptional rigidity under load, so you can confidently machine hard materials without movement or deflection.

The result is better surface finish, reduced tool wear, and more consistent part quality.

3. Long Trunnions or Heavy Fixtures

The longer the trunnion or the heavier the fixture, the more leverage you introduce to your setup. Even small inaccuracies in braking torque can cause positioning drift — especially when running high feedrates or cutting multiple parts at once.

The TS1200/3500 are designed to handle these larger, more demanding assemblies by offering the braking force needed to keep everything locked in place.

From 48" to 72" trunnion setups, these systems give you the control and rigidity needed for consistent results.

Which Braking Systems Do I Need?

TS1200: Ideal for mid-size trunnions and general-purpose high-torque applications.

TS3500: Best for large assemblies, extremely heavy fixtures, or high-horsepower machines generating major cutting forces

Both options are compatible with most rotary tables and can be integrated seamlessly into your existing setup.
