For over 100 years, Skidmore Pump, based in Benton Harbor, Michigan, has built a reputation for manufacturing industry-leading condensate return pumps, boiler feed systems, vacuum systems, and related accessories. But even with a long legacy of quality, their team knew there was room to improve efficiency—particularly in their machining department.
That opportunity came into focus after a conversation at IMTS 2022, where Skidmore connected with Martin Trunnion Tables. The challenge? Long setup times, excessive part handling, and reliance on manual secondary operations. The solution? A Stallion Trunnion Table paired with custom hydraulic workholding.

From Manual Operations to “Raw In, Finished Out”
Before implementing the trunnion table, Skidmore’s approach to machining was segmented and labor-intensive. Parts were roughed on their CNCs, then removed for secondary features—like mounting holes and taps—which were done manually. That meant extra setups, more opportunities for error, and inefficient use of machinist time.
Now, thanks to the integrated trunnion table, those same parts are fully machined in one setup. With multi-axis access and secure hydraulic fixturing, their machinists can complete both roughing and finishing operations without removing the part—dramatically reducing handling and setup time.
“We used to do three to four different setups between CNCs and manual operations,” said a Skidmore representative. “Now we go from raw part in, to finished part out—right on the machine.”
The Results: Faster Runs, Less Labor, More Inventory
While the trunnion has only been in service for just over a year, the impact is already clear:
20–25% labor savings per part, depending on part complexity
Fewer setups, leading to less risk of scrap and reduced downtime
Longer, more efficient production runs, allowing operators to run multiple machines simultaneously
Better inventory management, shifting from stockpiling raw material to maintaining shelves of finished goods
Increased machining bandwidth, freeing up time and capacity for new work
“We’re stocking out way less. If we are, it’s because we don’t have raw material—not because we can’t make the part fast enough.”

Unlocking Growth with Better Processes
Perhaps most importantly, this upgrade hasn’t just improved a single cell—it’s changed how Skidmore plans production as a whole. Their team has moved away from reactive, short runs and embraced larger batches, smarter scheduling, and more strategic inventory planning.
It’s the kind of transformation that doesn’t just save money—it creates opportunities. With more machine time available and greater control over part flow, Skidmore is well positioned to take on new work without adding overhead.
Partnering for Productivity
At Martin Trunnion Tables, we believe in building more than workholding. We build partnerships that drive measurable improvement on the shop floor. Skidmore Pump’s story is one example—but we see similar transformations happen every day when shops invest in the right tools and support.
